“If I have something on my mind, it is put in to song form.” DK is a 24 year old, Western Massachusetts artist with a long background of music running through his blood. FTU had the chance to learn a little more about the aspiring artist. Join us in getting to know DK below!
Are you familiar with a lot of local artists? Or do you focus more on out of state connections?
I’m actually very familiar with the local scene, and take great pride in it. I love Massachusetts music in general but I especially love the West Massachusetts scene. There is a ton of potential that hasn’t been tapped into yet, and I’d like to think one way or another I try to spot that potential and help any way I can.
When did you start making music?
I started releasing original music 4 years ago but music has always been a part of my life. My father does music for a living playing in a band. He also played as a duo at a Irish bar next to UMASS for 20+ years every Wednesday night. My Grandparents were in a church choir as well. For around 3 years I sang covers on Instagram and at a club I used to run. It was in college when I transitioned to originals.
What are your biggest inspirations when you write?
I’ve been through a lot in the last 4 years. Moving around, switching jobs, losing people figuratively and almost losing people close to me literally. All while still advancing myself musically just catches up mentally so I use the music as my therapy. If I have something on my mind, it gets put in to song form. Even if I don’t release it.
Whatever you have going on you can strive through! I’m glad you found a healthy way of coping, I myself do the same thing. When you throw feelings on a track, happy or sad, people can relate. That will help you advance. It takes a lot to put yourself out there and let people hear your thoughts.
It does take a lot, but at this point I’m so used to it that I don’t care about that. If I know I’m releasing something it’s because I like the way it sounds. I don’t really pay any mind to the reaction of putting my personal life in songs. I’m actually a pretty open book.
Do you produce or engineer as well?
Yes, all of my music is mixed and produced by me for the most part. My new album has 7/8 songs that I produced or co-produced.
Any big projects coming up?
I’m dropping an album in November. (Surprise date and title)
What is one random fact about you?
Oh God this is a good one! I’m in pro wrestling school right now. So not only am I making music, I am also doing this as well. Music is #1 but who knows where this could lead me. I also was a part of a short film this year!
In conclusion, DK is a very humble person with a strong passion for music. FTU looks forward to seeing what else he has in store. Keep up to date with DK on Twitter @_dkkkkk and be on the lookout for his album dropping in November…
