Catching Up With Yung Monty

Where are you from? Have your surroundings shaped you in a creative sense, and in what way?

I’m from Tucson, Arizona… Honestly, it’s a lowkey city, the music scene is not really popping here so it’s really like you gotta get this shit on your own, ya know? I think the city being so boring led me to being on the internet and hearing all these hidden gems on Soundcloud and that’s what shaped my creativity.

What’s your background like?

I lived in a drug ridden neighborhood growing up, so I stayed inside or skated in front of my house and kept pretty lowkey. Being a shut in led me to the obsession with the internet scene and all of the music and just the whole culture. My brother was a phenomenal skater so that led to me getting into skating and being at the skate park introduced me to different music and gave me a different fashion sense.

My top 5 artists at the moment are 1. Xxxtentacion 2. Yung Lean 3. Big Baby Scumbag 4. Bladee 5. $not

What made you start making music?

I was always obsessed with music, everyone around me knew it. I never had a sense of what I wanted to do in life and being into early Odd Future and Yung Lean I wanted to try for myself because I saw how young people could do it too if they wanted to. As soon as I made my first song I knew this was my destiny.

Who are your biggest influences?

My biggest influences are definitely X, Tyler, Yung Lean, and like Kanye.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

At the moment I can’t stop listening to Excuse Me by $not, or Lonely by my bro Killz, shoutout to him I love him, that’s my brother for life.

What keeps you going? How you doing mentally?

What keeps me going is knowing that the world in my palms. In X’s 2016 elevator interview he says something along the lines of “No matter what you do in life everyone’s gonna get their turn. Craving and ambition is the key and if you want something bad enough you will get it” That’s what I’ve been living by since I heard that, that’s what keeps me going. Mentally, I have problems but I can’t let it get to me, I will be shining soon enough.

How would you describe your style?

I don’t really have one style and I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT! I think loving so many different types of music really leaves my mind jumbled up whenever it’s time for me to look for instrumentals. My favorite type of music to make is the Auto-tune, Sad, Juice Wrld type love songs. The other style I like to experiment with is loud, distorted, mosh pit music cause who doesn’t like to get lit?

What do you hope to accomplish in 2019?

In 2019, I hope to accomplish the beginning of my come up and start seeing results. I want to start gaining exposure and getting people to hear my music. All I want is to bring sounds to people’s ears to make them happy and give them enjoyment. I know I can achieve that so in 2019 I want to start coming up
