Catching Up With Yung G

Catching Up With Yung G

Where are you from? Have your surroundings shaped you in a creative sense, and in what way?

I’m from a small town in Indiana but I moved to Indianapolis and that’s where I stay now. I think that my surroundings just pushed me to go harder. I’ve earned some respect but really nobody helps each other here. It’s like everybody fends for themselves and that’s scary and hard for anyone to gain traction. You never really hear of anyone really breaking out here like you do LA or Atlanta because there’s no scene here. No networking and opportunity.

What’s your background like?

I’m 19 years old, I didn’t really have the best childhood. I lost my dad when I was young maybe 10 or 11. And we moved around a lot when I was really young and didn’t really stop until almost high school so I never really had those life long friends. As soon as I graduated my family took off to Florida and I moved to Indy by myself.

Who are your top 5 favorite artists?

As of right now, mainstream wise; Drake, Juice Wrld, Gunna, Wayne, and Travis Scott. In no particular order. I have a super diverse group of artists I listen to tho.

What made you start making music?

I was always one to like hide emotions and whatnot inside. Like guys don’t show feelings. But with music I could get out all those feelings without .. feeling weak I guess. My dad really inspired me also he put me on to a lot of good music from a young age.

Who are your biggest influences?

As far as my sound I feel like I don’t pull from too many. I listen to so much music and so much variation that I think I just took all of it and developed it into my own sound. Because I can get on some vibey melody shit or just come heavier with the bars. I want to be the most diverse artist out.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

Testimony by Kodak black or I know by Lil Durk.

What keeps you going? How you doing mentally?

Sometimes I feel like I don’t know. Honestly but then I know my dad didn’t raise a quitter. Everything takes time. But mentally it’s hard to admit but I definitely go through super depressed phases. But in general, I’m getting by.

How would you describe your style?

Wavy. Diverse.

What do you hope to accomplish in 2019?

I believe in speaking things into existence so this year we’re taking over. I’m dropping a collab tape with fellow Indy native called “The Drip.” Then I’m putting my all into a solo project that I hope boosts me into being able to do music full time.
