Catching Up With V.RI

Where are you from? Have your surroundings shaped you in a creative sense, and in what way?

I’m from the U.K and live in a place called Milton Keynes… which honestly I feel lacks a soul, nothing in MK has benefited me artistically except drawing me to isolate myself and pave my own way, there is barely a music community here which I believe has purely benefited me, to be honest, however there are two artists who come from here and one is quite big in the underground but I don’t know if he wants me throwing his location out there. Recently I travel to London a lot more, and honestly, its 100x better everyone is just on the same wavelength and there are so many talented people, plus the shows we put on are just getting bigger and bigger. In short, my surroundings have predominantly been my bedroom…

What’s your background like?

My background is really difficult to explain, all my life I’ve grown up poor but my mum kept trying to make the effort to keep me in a well off area however due to this we have had to move 7 times around different areas of MK both rich and poor. I honestly have so many conflicting identities ethnicity and class wise that I’ve given up trying to fit in. I am Black, White and Vietnamese. I’ve been discriminated against by pretty much everyone, and never really felt like I belong to a group which further causes me to isolate myself, to be honest.

Who are your top 5 favorite artists?

My top 5 artists are:

Twenty-One Pilots (they exhibit so much creativity and the effort they put into live performances is something that should be studied by everyone in this community)

Cage The Elephant

The 1975

Bring Me The Horizon

Kendrick Lamar

What made you start making music?

I started making music because I’ve always been creative and I’ve always been surrounded by instruments and musicians all my life, I also want to create a legacy… but I’m not sure what I want that legacy to be yet.

Who are your biggest influences?

My biggest influences are Twenty-One Pilots and XXXTentacion I know that’s a pretty weird contrast but they both present such a grand eclectic mix of music and that has influenced me to keep doing the same and to make whatever I want with a positive message behind it… like sometimes ill be screaming on a heavily distorted track about the disgusting Xinjiang Muslim camps in China then others I’ll be making a happy bass guitar orientated song about how I love someone. I just love music, all types of music and if you traverse my discography I’m sure you’ll see that. I hate the overuse of the word “versatility” but I genuinely believe that no two V.RI songs are the same like put my shit on shuffle and if you’re not used to it your brain will do a backflip.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

My favourite song at the moment is ‘Always Forever’ by Cults

What keeps you going? How you doing mentally?

What keeps me going is the fact that I know I’m helping people. I literally made a whole song that I can listen to if I ever feel like giving up called ‘Should I Quit’ which details a story about how one of my listeners told me I helped save their life… and that’s honestly all I need to keep going. And I’m content with life at the moment things are appearing to move as they’re supposed to, and anything bad that happens to me is ok because I get to write a song about it.

How would you describe your style?

Right now me describing my style is just not very easy – now, I know that’s a generic answer but honestly, press shuffle on my Spotify and one time you could be listening to “Trap Metal” and the next you could be listening to a happy sounding U.K indie song… then if you’re brave enough if you press shuffle once more it might take you to a full-on rock song… or a lo-fi song about my ex but yeah, I can’t really describe my style. I just love making whatever I want and I feel like my listeners appreciate that. I really don’t wanna be grouped with these “versatile artists” that say they can do everything just because they can rap and use autotune sometimes over a guitar loop, that ain’t me. I produce 99% of my stuff, so its always very uniquely me.

What do you hope to accomplish this year?

This year I hope to accomplish a lot, I have a song dropping with Kamiyada and my brother BVDLVD, my collective have a lot of shows planned following our sold-out gig in April which was amazing. Honestly, I’m just going to keep working hard and see where this year takes me, I’m in this for the long game and I don’t expect massive success in just a few months. But I really want to do more shows. Shows are something that I feel are overlooked or are not treated with enough respect by artists… I always put my all into performances, from costume changes, to story based projections onto the stage, to crafted interludes, to masks and everything. I love engaging with the audience. I love surprising the audience and its very easy for me to do that with the kind of music I make as whenever I make a song I always think about what mental things I can do with it if I were to perform live.
