Catching Up With HORU$

Where are you from? Have your surroundings shaped you in a creative sense, and in what way?

I’m from New Jersey, but I moved to Atlanta when I turned 18 to pursue better opportunities. During my youth in NJ, I witnessed the beauty of the natural world. Moving to the city, I now know not to take it for granted. I try to create a walking thru a fantasy “forest” vibe when I’m making music, use the music to make people imagine themselves in nature.

What’s your background like?

I’m just a white kid from a small town; two parents, who I’m grateful for. They’ve always wanted me to pursue my dreams even though they might not understand the dream.

Who are your top 5 favorite artists?

If we’re talking hip hop, it’s gotta be Young Thug, Lil Tracy, The Underachievers, $uicideboy$ and Smokepurpp. If not only hip hop, I definitely put Deep Forest, XXYYXX and Crystal Castles in there too.

What made you start making music?

When my partner Damon Rays and I were friends in High school. He started making beats when we were like 15. We would freestyle sometimes too. One day when we were tripping on shrooms we were just like “let’s start making music for real.” And ever since then we’ve been the Con$cious Collective and have dropped over 50 tracks on SoundCloud alone.

Who are your biggest influences?

I find myself heavily influenced by 80’s musicians with their myriad of dreamy analog synths. But I am also heavily inspired by electronic artists from the 90s to today, as well as throwback movements like vaporwave. Vaperror’s “Mana Pool” is one of the great projects I’ve ever heard. Way ahead of its time.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

My favorite song at the moment is this 80s disco song I made with my producer Sriram Iyer. I’m really excited about it. We’re gonna make a video and release it sometime by May 2019.

What keeps you going? How you doing mentally?

I have a small but secure inner network of supporters and collaborators that continue to motivate me and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. I also have a lot of friends online and real life who are always encouraging. I try to stay positive at all times even though I know the music industry is cut throat. I try to just keep going in life, stopping your goals and dreams is a recipe for regret and torment later on.

How would you describe your style?

We (the Con$cious Collective) are at the forefront of psychedelic trap. We are very dreamy, airy, ambient sounding, generally in some uplifting way. We try to make trippy sounds with hard drums. We are also very world inspired, I try to sample obscure instruments and animals from other cultures.

What do you hope to accomplish in 2019?

I hope to drop a lot of singles with Con$cious Collective as well as some videos and a mix tape by the end of the year. As a solo artist, I am dropping my own little EP shortly, and some singles of my own this year.

Keep up with HORU$:
