Catching Up With Grayden

Where are you from? Have your surroundings shaped you in a creative sense, and in what way?

I’m from Apex, North Carolina which is about 10-15 minutes from Raleigh. It’s very rare to find a real hip-hop fan where I’m from because people really only listen to what’s popular/ what’s played on the radio. The people I know in Apex seem like they’re afraid to be themselves, and I didn’t realize how that can impact someone’s creativity until I moved away for school. People try their hardest to make you feel like an outcast or even try to make you feel shameful for doing something out of the ordinary. Since moving away, I have felt and watched my creativity grow and take my music to new heights.

What’s your background like?

I’m white as fuck. I come from a white family and attended (mostly) white schools growing up. I am extremely lucky to have the kind of childhood that I had. Both parents are active in my life and have always pushed me to do well in school and encourage me through whatever goals I set for myself. I’ve loved music since before I can remember even though neither of my parents have any musical talent or play musical instruments.

Who are your top 5 favorite artists?

It’s difficult to pick 5 but right now I really like JID, Anderson .paak, Action Bronson, Goldlink, and Mac Miller (who will always remain in my top 5)

What made you start making music?

I started getting into/ understanding music when I was in the 6th grade. I joined the middle school band as a percussionist and really enjoyed it. I always took creative liberties with my parts and it drove my teachers crazy. But in my head, I would think that what I was doing sounded so much better than what was written on the sheet music. After I saved enough money to buy my own music equipment I really just took that creative feeling and ran with it.

Who are your biggest influences?

I grew up listening to A Tribe Called Quest and The Beastie Boys. Those two groups will always be huge influences for me. Other than that, Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar, Action Bronson, The Alchemist, 9th Wonder, Knxwledge, and J. Cole are all god tier artists in my eyes.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

Terry – Action Bronson. One of my favorite instrumentals of all time.

What keeps you going? How you doing mentally?

I’m doing really well. At this point, I’m really just trying to learn and get better with music and that always makes me feel better about my craft.

How would you describe your style?

Organic. Everything I make now is a product of in-the-moment thinking and going with what I think sounds best. I used to decide what kind of song I wanted to make before sitting down to actually make it, and I was always left disappointed. Letting my ideas branch off each other has done wonders for the music I make now.

What do you hope to accomplish in 2019?

In 2019 all I care about is making better music. I don’t have a whole lot of lofty goals set for this year because I want to really focus on learning and getting better. Let’s talk about what we want to accomplish come 2020.
