Catching Up With BELT

Catching Up With BELT

Where are you from? Have your surroundings shaped you in a creative sense, and in what way?

I grew up in Miami, but I live in the Bay Area now. I used to skate a lot and the skate culture at the time influenced me in terms of music and clothing.

What’s your background like?

I’m 21, grew up in Miami, moved to the Bay Area for school, took a break from school, started music and here we are.

Who are your top 5 favorite artists?

My top 5 artists are Kanye, Earl Sweatshirt, Wu-Tang Clan, Kid Cudi, and Gucci Mane. I could listen to them 24/7 and not get tired of their music.

What made you start making music?

I’ve always done musical things. Growing up I learned how to play the guitar, a little bit of piano, the trombone, etc. I grew up listening to 90’s rap and always kept up with the new artists that came along. I’ve been messing around on Ableton for like 6 years now (21 now.) I always liked rapping on my beats more than I did making them so I just started rapping.

Who are your biggest influences?

My biggest influences are probably Kanye, Black Kray, and Earl Sweatshirt. Kanye really knows how to make a catchy hook and get things stuck in your mind. Black Kray is so good at getting the best groove possible in a beat. I like Earls rhyme schemes and lyrical content. I listen to their songs to this day and pick things up that went over my head for years.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

No Stylist/Molly by Playboi Carti. It’s an unreleased song that he performed in Miami and someone took a video of it and some FL Studio genius recreated the beat and overlayed the concert vocals.

What keeps you going? How you doing mentally?

I know it sounds cliché but I like to live every day like it’s my last. I don’t wanna look back and be like I should have done that. Also, I’m having a lot of fun doing this and that is probably the biggest motivator. Mentally I’m doing good, I’m just as stressed as any person my age is haha. I don’t let it get to me too much tho.

How would describe your style?

Basically, my style is rapping conventionally but emphasizing the groove and vocal effects. I’d say my lyrical content is a reflection of thoughts and events that are relevant to my life.

What do you hope to accomplish in 2019?

I really want to expand my catalog so I can perform at shows!
