Catching Up With Jillian Nadeau

How old are and where are you from?

I’m 20 years old, originally from Broward County, FL but I currently reside in Orlando

Have your surroundings shaped you in a creative sense, and in what way?

Absolutely! Ever since I moved to Orlando a couple years ago, I’ve surrounded myself with a lot more musical and visual artists. Their hard work inspires me to work hard on my own craft. It also helps when people want to collaborate because I sometimes get to experiment with new sounds. So yeah, my surroundings have definitely shaped me creatively

What’s your background like?

I didn’t have a difficult upbringing at all. I’m lucky to have two loving parents that support me and what I want to do. I didn’t always know that I wanted to pursue music professionally though. My first dream was to be the first woman in the NHL [laughing]

Who are your top 5 favorite artists?

Ariana Grande, Travis Scott, Imogen Heap, Chase Atlantic, and Belis

What made you start making music?

For most of my life, I’ve been singing songs that weren’t written by me. So, I thought, “it’d be cool if I wrote my own stuff AND sang it.” Artistry runs in my family, I just had to find my medium; music is that medium for me.

Who are your biggest influences?

Imogen Heap and Ariana Grande are my influences for the ways that I build my harmonies. Travis Scott was one of the main artists that got me into trap music specifically. I have to give credit to older bands like Journey and Styx for motivating me to be experimental with my sound as well. Rock music is something that also influences me, even though it may not directly show in my music right now. (That’s a hint that it may in the near future)

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

“Daytime Shakes” by Little Lazy

What keeps you going? How you doing mentally?

I really want to make it for my family. A lot of my drive comes from them, as I enjoy making them proud. I know they’re already proud of me and what I’m doing, but that just drives me to keep going. Mentally, I’m doing great right now. A few months ago, I wasn’t doing so hot which is how I was able to write “Would You?” That song was written after a depressive episode but it’s a great example of how music has been a type of therapeutic release for me. I really think music has saved me at some points in my life. It’s more than art to me.

How would you describe your fashion sense?

It really depends on what I’m feeling some days. Lately, I’ve been wearing joggers and fanny packs over the shoulder – I guess leaning towards streetwear. And sometimes when I’m feeling extra girly, I wear big hoodies and shorts. I guess you could look at Ariana or Billie Eilish and see some similarities; except the ponytail – I’ve been doing that forever! (Sorry, Ariana)

What do your parents think about you doing music?

They love it! They’re always telling their friends that their daughter is pursuing music. My mom loves to show her friends and coworkers my stuff which I think is super cool. I also appreciate that my brother and sister-in-law are super supportive as well. I always looked up to my brother when it came to his music taste because it seemed like he only ever listened to good music. So, seeing that he listens to my music makes me feel cool! [laughs]

Outside of music, what do you do?

I go to school at UCF, I’m always getting boba tea, and I hang out with my friends a lot. Though, music is something I do pretty much every day, whether it’s writing, recording, or performing at open mics
